HOW SHOULD I DRESS FOR THE US VISA INTERVIEW?
Dr D K Sharma, in his book, A Comprehensive Guide To The US Student Visa, suggests that,
Dress appropriately and professionally. However, there is no need to overdress in a three-piece suite, a brand new shirt and pants, or any expensive designer outfits.
It would appear strange if the temperature outside was soaring and you were sweating in your overly formal attire.
The goal is to seem respectable while being natural and easygoing. A tie on a formal shirt will give you a professional appearance. Semi-formal dress is also acceptable.
Do not attempt to dress casually in Bermudas, shorts, or T-shirts. Wear nothing that says "I love America," has an American flag on it, is obscene, or promotes some form of an extremist philosophy, etc.
Believe me, the visa officer will not be enamoured with someone dressed as a clown. The cop carrying the "I love America" placard on a T-shirt is not impressed.
It only demonstrates how eager the individual is to get an American visa. The more desperate you seem, the less likely you are to be granted a visa.
Ladies must adhere to a similar guideline. A formal or semi-formal outfit with a closed-toe shoe may provide a professional appearance.
Finally, keep in mind that the clothing should be presentable and appealing. A good cultural/ethnic dress of your nation is also generally recognised and regarded highly.
