Choosing to Attend Graduate School

Following graduation, I worked as a programme assistant for a big environmental and growth firm in Washington, D.C. The employment was a good match for my professional goals, but my position did not provide me the power to make direct choices. Many senior programme officers and vice presidents within the firm advised me on how to qualify for these sorts of positions. The answers were often the same: get a graduate degree in a related discipline and develop field expertise.

Within a year, I had joined the United States Peace Corps and was working on health and economic development initiatives in a rural community in Cote d'Ivoire. After three years of operations in West Africa, I returned to the United States and began applying to graduate schools of international relations that offered strong programmes for economic and political success.

My past job experience and fieldwork were tremendously helpful in allowing me to focus on graduate school. Knowing why I had returned to school and what I intended to learn from the experience helped me choose courses and cultivate a functional focus. My goal was to compare the utility of my fieldwork to current empirical assumptions to determine whether what I saw might be clarified or better explained by theoretical and comparative investigations.

Is there a benefit to going to graduate school? In both cases, sure. There will surely be expenses. To do well in graduate school, you must dedicate a large amount of time and money, and the never-ending demands of reading and studying might be overwhelming. Her scar currency is free time. Money is also a factor. The advantage of all of this is that after you finish your degree, you will be able to apply for better employment with higher compensation. Graduate school will hasten your entry into more autonomous, decision-making responsibilities in practically every field.
