Applications for processing studies for the Fall 2021 semester

If you apply for your full study licence (containing your biometrics and findings from the immigration medical examination) by 15 May 2021, you should make a decision in time to start the autumn semester by 6 August 2021.

We will review all applications received as soon as possible after 15 May 2021, however we cannot promise that you will reach a final decision before the fall semester starts.

Certain applications take longer and may not be completed until 6 August 2021, for example

The officer is incomplete and needs you to ask for additional information.

Students from Quebec

If you are submitting your application for a study licence by 15 May 2021, without the official copy of your CAQ, you must submit the official CAQ by 30 June 2021 to complete your request on time for the autumn semester.

Ready your papers.

Before applying for a permission to study, you need:

Letter of admission from a specified educational institution (DLI)

You and any family members who come with you may support a valid passport or travel document evidence while you are in Canada.

You need an acceptance letter from a recognised learning institution to apply for a study visa. A designated learning institution is a school that receives foreign students from a province or territorial government.

In Canada, all elementary and secondary schools are designated educational institutions. This list does not include them.

Make sure it is on this list if you intend on attending a post-secondary institution.

If your school loses its designated status after receiving your study licence, you can:

Continue to study your programme until your present permission is expired, but only if you register at a recognised learning institution may you renew your permit.

Permission for postgraduate work

You need to know whether you can work after graduation.

Not all approved learning institutions allow you to participate in the work permit programme after graduation.

You need to fulfil all other requirements to get a postgraduate job permit along with a degree from an authorised recognised learning institution.

The following list will show you if your chosen learning institution provides programmes to enable you to obtain a post-graduate work visa.

Only a few DLIs for foreign students presently studying outside of Canada may be reopened. Make sure your DLI is on the list of those with authorised COVID-19 preparedness plans before you go to Canada. If your DLI is not on this list, you will not be allowed to enter Canada.

If you are applying for a full study visa by 15 May 2021, you should take a decision by 6 August 2021. Some applications take longer and cannot be completed before the autumn semester.
