Do you know this story about A civilised nation is one that shows compassion to refugees?

Newcastle upon Tyne - Letters & Pat Beesley

Priti Patel's latest ideas for dealing with migrants and asylum seekers are dubbed "horrible." Writers in the United Kingdom believe they deserve to be treated with compassion, decency, and respect. They are protesting the home secretary's harsh, inhumane, unlawful, and unworkable plan. The cruel offshore detention system in Australia is not a model for the United Kingdom.

People were robbed of their identities, the reasons for their departure were disregarded, and victims of conflict zones were blamed for leaving. This adds to the pain produced by civil war and individuals battling for the ideals we cherish.

We are Exiled Authors Ink members who are refugee and migrant writers residing in the United Kingdom, and we are appalled by Priti Patel's latest ideas for dealing with refugees and asylum seekers (Priti Patel to reveal proposals for offshore centres for asylum seekers, 5 July). We deserve to be treated with compassion, decency, and respect after going through terrible ordeals to reach the UK, enduring agony or fear in our home countries or on our travels.

The law should be compassionate rather than criminalising migrants merely because they are compelled to utilise unorthodox ways to enter the nation. The reason for the perilous and illegal trips into the UK is the harsh system that prohibits refugees from entering the nation legally. Importantly, Patel must be aware of the severe dangers of returning migrants to their home countries, considering that many regimes would be delighted to welcome the deportees in order to murder them.

Patel's proposals to relocate asylum seekers to distant offshore detention facilities will result in refugees escaping from one jail just to enter another. Furthermore, this approach incites prejudice by implying that we refugees are untouchables who should be excluded from society.

Refugees eventually make a beneficial contribution to this nation. We bring a lot of experience, education, and expertise with us. Patel's proposal is not about attempting to repair a dysfunctional immigration system, since if the true goal was to process refugee applications, asylum applicants would be retained in the UK.

It is obvious that the home secretary has a terrible, deadly agenda for the needy individuals who come to our nation to seek shelter. We are protesting a harsh, inhumane, unlawful, and unworkable plan.

• Please allow me to make a plea to your decision-makers and the civilised population: do not follow Australia's lead and relocate refugees (who have a "well-founded fear of persecution") offshore. I've been embarrassed of Australia's policy of putting people up thousands of miles abroad with little hope of ever being freed. Heartless policies and outsourced administration, such as offshore imprisonment, escape the scrutiny that a civilised society demands.

Australia's cruel offshore detention system is not a model for the UK; rather, it is a case study in bad public policy. People were robbed of their identities, the reasons for their departure were disregarded, and victims of conflict zones were blamed for leaving. They are called and recognised by number, and they have limited access to healthcare, particularly mental health treatment. This exacerbates the pain produced by civil conflict and, in many instances, individuals fighting for the ideals we hold dear.

The Australian experience has resulted in self-harm, dehumanisation, children being left without appropriate development education, and long-term trauma, as well as a lack of compassion and humanity.

Please, I urge the UK not to follow one of Australia's worst instances of policymaking and instead to seek compassionate, empathetic, and sensible answers. Rather of punishing the victims, address the root causes of the issues that force people to leave their homes. • Priti Patel has manipulated the language once again to suit her purposes. Yes, we have a "broken asylum system," with huge delays in decision-making and harsh treatment of asylum applicants. But first, let's be clear about where this is coming from. We were warned many years ago that the Home Office was unfit for purpose, and nothing has changed. The backlog of cases awaiting resolution is the result of a broken system, not an uncontrolled influx of migrants.

Patel has skillfully turned the emphasis to the "vile criminals" who transport people over the Channel. No one likes to see desperate asylum seekers duped by unscrupulous traffickers, but it is the Home Office that has created additional possibilities for people smugglers by essentially shutting off any “legal” path into the nation for individuals in need of protection. She now wants criminal penalties for anybody “knowingly” entering the UK without permission, as well as penalty for nations that refuse to send them back. The latter suggests an out-of-control Home Office.

Patel claims that the British people have “time and again” opted to tighten our borders, and that this new system would be “fair but firm.” I, for one, did not vote for it; the “fair” appears to have been lost along the way, and the “firm” seems draconian. When did we forget that asylum seekers are men, women, and children fleeing conflict, tyranny, and dangers to their life, yearning for a safe haven? When did we lose our humanity and turn our backs on people in need?
